To get into ice hockey in Dubai, most people learn to skate first. You can start at a public session at Dubai Ice Rink or Sport Society in Mirdif, then take a learn-to-skate class or join a beginner hockey group. Between 19 and 31 October 2026, Dubai Ice Rink charged AED 100 for a 90-minute Monday to Thursday morning session with skates included, per its own ticket page.

This guide covers the first step: getting comfortable on ice. It is for adults trying hockey for the first time and for parents of young beginners.

Why learn to skate before hockey?

Hockey is played on skates, so skating is the base skill. A player who cannot stop or turn spends the session falling rather than learning the game. The learn-to-skate programmes we checked all start with the same basics:

  • balance and safe gliding
  • forward and backward strokes
  • stopping
  • turning and crossovers

Sport Society's learn-to-skate page lists these skills and says students move at their own pace. Dubai Ice Rink's Hockey Academy also focuses on skating technique, and uses no hard pucks.

Dubai Ice Rink skating academies

Emaar lists a Tots Skating Academy (12 October to 18 November), a Kids Skating Academy and an Adults Skating Academy (both 6 October to 15 November). The year is not printed. Fees are on separate booking pages, not on the main attraction page. They are listed separately from the Hockey Academy, and suit anyone who wants a structured start before moving to the Hockey Academy at the same rink.

Sport Society, Mirdif

Sport Society opened its rink in 2022. Its learn-to-skate page gives a starting age of 4 in one place and 6 in another, so ask which applies. Coaching is pay-as-you-go or in packs of 3, 5 or 10 classes. It is also where Galaxy Hockey Academy trains, which makes it a natural place to move from skating into hockey.

Galaxy Hockey Academy

Galaxy lists learn-to-skate coaching for first-time skaters of any age, alongside its hockey groups. It offers a free first session. For children it says it provides the gear. It does not say whether adults can borrow kit, so ask when you book.

Can you play hockey at a Dubai Ice Rink public session?

We found no rule that allows it. The Emaar page lists what is banned on the ice during public sessions, including:

  • excessive speed, horseplay, pushing and tag games
  • sharp objects in pockets
  • selfie sticks and bags

The page does not mention hockey sticks or pucks at all. Given the ban on horseplay and the crowds at public sessions, assume sticks and pucks are not allowed. If you want to practise with a stick, ask the rink about hockey academy sessions or private ice hire.

Hockey skates for hire

Standard hire skates come with entry, in sizes EU25 to EU52, per Emaar. The same page says premium hockey skates can be hired at an additional charge; the rink's add-ons table for 19 to 31 October 2026 lists them at AED 45. Hockey skates have no toe pick, unlike figure skates, so beginners heading for hockey may want to learn on them. Ask at the counter.

What should I wear for my first session?

Dubai Ice Rink's rules give a useful checklist:

  • Cover your arms and legs. The rink suggests dressing for winter; ice temperature averages about −5°C, per Emaar.
  • Wear gloves. They are recommended; Emaar's FAQ lists gloves at AED 10.
  • No trailing clothes. Scarves, long coats, long dresses and national dress are not allowed on the ice.
  • Helmets are recommended, especially for children, but not mandatory.
  • Leave phones in a locker. Lockers are included.

Children under 120 cm must have an adult with them at all times at Dubai Ice Rink. Skating aids (penguins and snowmen) are available.

Worked example: an adult's first month

Say you are an adult who wants to try hockey and has never skated. One way to start, using published prices as of 23 October 2026:

Week What you do Cost
1 One weekday morning public session at Dubai Ice Rink AED 100
2 Another weekday morning session, practising stopping AED 100
3 Book a free first session with Galaxy in Mirdif AED 0 (per Galaxy)
4 Decide: adult skating classes, or an adult hockey group Ask for fees

Total so far: AED 200 plus travel. The class fees in week 4 are not published, so get them in writing. Our adult ice hockey guide covers the next step.

Is it the same in Abu Dhabi?

Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi has its own skating academy. Its 2025/2026 price sheet lists Fundamental Starter and Fundamental Skater groups and power skating at AED 110 a session, though parts of the table are garbled. The sheet does not mention hockey. Public sessions cost AED 85 off-peak (Monday to Thursday) and AED 110 at peak times, per its site on 23 October 2026. Call 02 403 4333 for class details.

When am I ready to move to hockey?

None of the programmes we checked publishes a skating test for entry. A sensible personal check is whether you can glide, stop and get up without help. Beginner hockey groups exist for people who are still learning, so you do not need to be a strong skater to join one. Ask the coach which group fits.

Once you are ready, look at kids' ice hockey in Dubai or every rink and club in Dubai. For kit, see ice hockey equipment in Dubai.

What to check before you act

  • Confirm public session times on the day; they change for events.
  • Ask whether hockey skate hire is available and what it costs.
  • Do not bring a stick or puck to a public session without asking.
  • Check Sport Society's current prices; our only figures are from July 2025.
  • Ask each academy for term dates and fees in writing.

Questions people ask

Do I need to skate before joining ice hockey in Dubai?

Not always. Galaxy Hockey Academy takes complete beginners and teaches skating, and Dubai Ice Rink's Hockey Academy has a beginner group. But extra time on the ice at public sessions helps you keep up.

Can you play hockey during a public session at Dubai Ice Rink?

The Emaar page does not mention sticks or pucks. Its rules ban horseplay, tag games and sharp objects, so assume sticks and pucks are not allowed unless the rink tells you otherwise.

Can I hire hockey skates at Dubai Ice Rink?

Yes. Emaar says premium hockey skates can be hired for an additional charge; the rink's add-ons table for 19 to 31 October 2026 lists VIP hockey skates at AED 45. Standard hire skates come with entry, in sizes EU25 to EU52.

How long does it take to learn to skate for hockey?

It depends on the person and how often they skate. Programmes we checked let learners progress at their own pace rather than setting a fixed timeline.

What age can children start learning to skate in Dubai?

Dubai Ice Rink says 4 is the ideal starting age. Sport Society's page gives both 4 and 6, and Galaxy takes children from 3.
